In SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical, the inhabitants of Bikini Bottom find themselves in peril as a volcano called Mount Humongous threatens to erupt and destroy the town. SpongeBob endeavors to save his beloved home and his friends. For the Broadway Musical, SpongeBob's costume has been revamped with a yellow checkered shirt and plaid pants, compared to SpongeBob's costume in the original run at the Oriental Theater in Chicago, and his design in the Nickelodeon series.
