Daruma dolls are seen as a symbol of perseverance and good luck, making them a popular gift of encouragement." (Wikipedia) The actual history of the doll is a bit gruesome. The shape of the doll is based on the Buddhist monk mentioned above, who allegedly meditated facing a wall for 9 years, during which time his arms and legs fell off. The original doll was male and had no eyes (more gruesome story). It wasn't until later that the doll was made as a female as well. The largest of these 3 dolls is 9&1/4" tall and approx. 6" across at her widest point. Unlike the other 2 dolls, her face is beautifully painted on fabric over molded styrofoam. She is wrapped in several layers of a rich brocade fabric. The middle doll is is approx. 6&1/4" tall. Her face, and that of her little 'sister' are plaster. She has a tiny chip on the tip of her nose. The littlest doll is just 3&1/4" tall! In spite of being intended as "roly poly" dolls, the largest 2 dolls have fabric wrapped bases so they do not roll over. They are being sold as a set only, but you may want to break them up and give them as good luck gifts to 3 very special people! If I have over estimated the shipping by more than $1.50, I will refund the difference.
