The rum that gave the Dominican Republic distillery its letters of nobility, Barcelo Imperial was created in 1980. To mark the thirtieth anniversary of its production, Barcelo Imperial has been made into an even more exclusive rum: blended from former Imperial reserves, this Premium Blend has been aged for a further two years in oak casks that once contained Château d'Yquiem. A double gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and a platinum medal from the International Review of Spirits attest to its exceptional character. Laurent's tasting notes Deep amber color. The nose is greedy yet dry. A very pleasant woodiness mingled with nuts (especially walnuts and almonds) takes center stage. Aromas of caramel coffee try to steal the show, but don't quite succeed. Slight mushroom notes complete the profile. On the palate, the attack is sweeter than expected, and this sweet impression becomes increasingly present with each passing second. The 43% alcohol content keeps this rum from sinking into a liquorish extreme. There's caramel and, in the background, nuts and roasted notes. The finish is rather long and clearly dominated by caramel and nuts. The cask, however, remains in ambush not far behind.
